BYD Motors Inc. Announces Partnership with Volta Air Inc. at the 2018 Advanced Clean Transportation Expo Long Beach, CA

Volta Air Technologies (“Volta Air”) and BYD Auto (CNY:SHE) made a major announcement recently at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, CA about a new partnership and collaborative project aimed at demonstrating and commercializing the first all-electric refrigeration delivery vehicle.
The ACT expo is the largest conference and expo for showcasing technologies for transportation, drive trains, and clean fuels. During a conference session titled “Zero Emissions for Refrigerated Trailers”, Kris Malek, Volta’s CEO, presented the company’s latest all-electric transport refrigeration unit (TRU) and announced the partnership with BYD Motors Inc., the largest electric bus manufacturer in North America and the largest electric vehicle company in the world. The two companies are joining forces to create a disruptive solution as an alternative to conventional refrigeration units for urban delivery vehicles that are either engine-powered or diesel-powered and significantly consume less fuel used by the vehicle during the day.
According to Malek, “Integrating Volta Air’s electric refrigeration units with BYD’s all electric vehicles is a win-win because the transport vehicle industry has clearly signalled the need for a zero-emission refrigeration vehicle and we will be the first to offer them a viable solution”.
Jack Symington, Regional Sales Manager for BYD Motors, also presented in the session and confirmed BYD’s desire to partner with Volta Air because of their leading-edge electric refrigeration platform for urban delivery market.
The integration of the Volta Air and BYD platforms will involve multiple new and innovative features including a custom truck body built on BYD’s platform, flexible solar panels on the vehicle roof, and a SmartPower integration device for monitoring and communicating critical information. The SmartPower device will feature advanced functionality that will allow customers to monitor and control all critical parameters related to cold-chain monitoring and also select advanced or custom pre-cooling cycles.
Presently, the two companies are designing and validating the integrated platform concept and will demonstrate two full-size vehicles in California and Pennsylvania in June 2018. In the long-term, the companies will evaluate and pursue pathways for commercializing the zero-emission platform and delivering it to the marketplace in partnership with major grocery retailers.
